Early Career Research Fellowship (ECRF)

GlobalEd Academy offers a one-year fellowship program for early career researchers and scholar-practitioners. ECRFs have monthly workshops and other opportunities for professional development. They develop an online course for GlobalEd and publish at least one essay. The Fellowship supports critical and cutting-edge scholarship in the field.

Announcing the 2024 Fellows

Dr. Gian Hernandez

Gian Hernandez is an assistant professor at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Communication Science from the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI). He has published in the Journal of Comparative and International Higher Education, Journal of Multidisciplinary Perspectives in Education, and Journal of Contemporary European Studies, among others. Gian holds an MA in Global Studies from Universität Humboldt zu Berlin, in collaboration with the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO) Argentina.

Dr. Kombe Kapatamoyo

Dr. Kombe Kapatamoyo is a highly accomplished professional with a diverse background in public health, education, and international affairs. Holding a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health Education from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Dr. Kapatamoyo's expertise extends across various disciplines, including mental health, public policy, cultural diversity, and global health. With a Master's in Public Health from Ohio University and a Master of Arts in African Studies, she brings a rich academic foundation to her work. Dr. Kapatamoyo's research interests focus on minority health, global health, mental health, community development, and social determinants of health.


Dr. Josiah Koh

Josiah Koh, an award-winning academic and Learning and Development (L&D) specialist, is dedicated to advancing Open and Distance Flexible Learning (ODFL), refining teaching practices, and exploring emerging educational technologies such as AI in education. As a lecturer at The Open Polytechnic NZ with over seven years of experience in higher education, Koh is recognized for his innovative contributions, in the areas of teacher-AI relationships and the role of AI in the classroom. His commitment to creating a dynamic and technologically advanced learning environment showcases his forward-thinking approach. Koh's influence extends beyond traditional teaching methods, positioning him as a key figure in shaping the future of education.

The 2023 Early Career Research Fellows were the inaugural cohort. Read their bios below.

Silvia Espinal Meza

Silvia Espinal Meza earned a B.A. in Sociology and a M.A. in Human Development by Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP). Silvia has an extensive work experience in the educational field from the roles of lecturer, researcher and consultant in her native Peru. For the last 10 years, she has been engaged in educational projects from a critical perspective including frameworks from the Sociology of Education, International Education and Human Development for analysing educational issues. 

She is currently a PhD candidate in Education at the University of Bristol (UK) and Teaching Fellow leading a lectureship on Education inequalities at the University of Bath (UK). Silvia is a sociologist interested in critical perspectives to understand education and social justice. Her doctoral research focuses on the narratives of social justice and critical pedagogies from the voices of teachers in rural Peru.

Dr. Bill Robertson Geibel

A global scholar and practitioner, Bill Robertson Geibel currently holds a dual appointment at UC San Diego’s Sixth College as a faculty member and the Associate Director of Experiential Learning. In this role he oversees and teaches within the College’s experiential learning program, where he strives to develop real world learning opportunities that incorporate the values of civic engagement, critical reflection, and global citizenship. 

As an academic, Bill’s teaching and scholarship lies at the intersection of globalization, diplomacy, and higher education. In particular, much of his work investigates the diplomatic role of universities, including how they prepare students to be engaged citizens, both within and beyond national borders. His work has been published in multiple outlets including the Journal for Comparative and International Higher Education, the Journal of Education and Social Sciences Research, and the Journal of Turkish Weekly. He holds a BA from UC Santa Barbara, an MA from Brandeis University, and a PhD in International Education from UCLA. 

Dr. M. Isabel Kamlongera

Dr M.I. Kamlongera has a PhD in Educational Sciences for Teacher Education from Oslo Metropolitan University in Norway. She additionally holds an MA in Communication and Development and an M.Ed Critical Studies from Ohio University, U.S.A. Her academic interests include exploring critical approaches to research within the fields of gender, media, and development. Her research efforts are geared towards a decolonial approach to telling narratives and creating knowledge together with marginalized groups.

Dr. Rebecca Hovey


Rebecca Hovey is an experienced scholar-practitioner in the related fields of international higher education and global studies. She is Director of the Office of Study Away at Trinity College (CT). She directs GlobalEd's Early Career Research Fellows Program.
